How do we meet the needs of students for electives and still help them improve their academic skills?

What if there were designated days throughout the year (don't know how many) when special electives would be introduced and all students (or by grade level) would participate? Students could choose a 'workshop' to attend during that time to get an introduction to the talent/skill. Hopefully there would also be potential to extend the learning beyond the school. Topics centered around hobbies and interests students have shown (Google Form) they desire more information. Bring in the community expertise. Clubs and other organizations in the community that could provide hands-on experiences. 4H, Athletic organizations, cooking, crafts such as knitting, bike repair, rock band, etc. Maybe call they "Exploratory Expeditions" or something? This would not only to build interests in students, but also to acknowledge the activities that many of our students engage in outside of school hours. (John Smith)
