As you consider the students of Horizon Middle School, what are some met and unmet needs?
Reading across the content areas . . . It would be nice to have a common vocabulary/similar reading strategies that all teachers use when reading non-fiction texts. We need more rigor in academics.
Needs of Horizon students that are met .....
Students are identified for remedial opportunities for reading and math and are given (required?) to have the extra time for instruction.
Exposure to variety of cultures represented by our student body
Opportunities for involvement (ie music, leadership, after school clubs, ASB, and sports)
Supportive learning environment...teachers have students' best interests in mind.
Needs of Horizon students that are NOT met .....
Range of exploratory classes to address the interests of students more than the desires of staff.
In the past students have responded to surveys that they want hands-on, fun classes.
Are we restricted with what we could offer students as exploratory courses?
Seems that too many students are scheduled into some classes they have no interest in taking. They become behavior issues, or do not participate. How do we connect these students to their interests?
Microtrend: foundational knowledge insufficient for success at current grade level
Microtrend: disconnect w/ school environment in general (for different reasons), they feel no purpose or place here...Is this what the Why Try
group is for?
Response for Needs that are not met . . . . How can we best meet the needs of learners at HMS?
